The Bricklayer by August Sander

bricklayer

This is one of August Sander’s best photographs, a bold, powerful portrait. The power of the image stems from its dramatic lighting, through which the bricklayer’s face, framed by bricks, emerges into the darkness behind. He stares straight into the lens, with confidence as if he has been doing this job for a very long time. One hand is held on his hip and the other is holding the bricks so they are balanced carefully on a plate on his shoulders.

Konditor (Pastry cook) by August Sander

The way that the chef is standing with such confidence and power suggests that he is the head chef and that all other chefs work for him, this is also suggested by the bowl and oven being much lower than him, this show that he is on top and that he has the power. Also the fact that he is quite overweight in a time when food was hard to come by and most people couldn’t afford to eat often.

August Sander was a documentary and portrait photographer from Germany. His work includes landscape, nature, architecture and street photographer but he is mainly known for his portraits. Face of our Time was published in 1929.

The last resort by Martin Parr

the last resort

This iconic photo attempts to show many things and different interpretations of things like how the word resort could mean holiday resort but could also mean the last thing you could do to ensure something happens, just like how in the photo there is a person lying face down trying to get a tan and relax.

Unseen City by Martin Parr

unseen city

This photo screams Britain, from the British flags to the police who are in the British police uniforms. There is also very stereotypical British weather from the rain and the raincoats and umbrellas.

Icons by Steve McCurry

This photo shows the power of nature and how its where we originated from, we see this from how the background has a very natural green just like the green cloth on her shoulder. This suggests that she is in a forest or in some sort of natural place. Her eyes also match the background so it suggests she has a connection to the forest.

Logi Cult by steve McCurry

logi cult

This man is clearly a member of a tribe, this is shown by the stone in his lip and by the cloths he is wearing, they are of a strange colour and how it has a strap going around his torso. Not to mention the background which very much looks like a tribal area shown by the grass and metal wall. This video is probably to shed light on his country
